Latest U.S. Tariff Update — October 30, 2025
1. U.S. to Reduce the “Fentanyl Tariff” on Chinese Goods from 20% to 10%
The U.S. government announced that it will lower, rather than completely remove, the additional 20% tariff on certain Chinese goods labeled under the so-called “Fentanyl Tariff” to 10%.
2. Suspension of the 24% Retaliatory Tariff on Chinese Goods Extended for One Year
The 24% retaliatory tariff that had been proposed will remain suspended for another year.
This means that, barring any special developments, the current 10% tariff level will continue throughout the next 12 months.
Note that the 24% tariff was never actually implemented.
Current Situation:
For most general goods, the total tariff rate remains approximately 45% (calculated as 25% (2018)+ 10% (fentanyl)+ 10%(34% then suspended 24%).
For goods containing steel or aluminum, the overall rate is still around 85%.
In summary, the recent adjustment makes little practical difference compared to previous levels — the previous rate was roughly 55%.

Top officials from the US and China have ended two days of what both sides described as “constructive” talks by agreeing to continue working to extend their 90-day tariff truce. 2025-7-30.
